What it measures
The interest rate at which the RBI lends short-term funds to commercial banks against government securities — the primary tool of monetary policy signalling.
How it is calculated
Set by vote of the RBI's six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at each bi-monthly meeting, targeting CPI inflation of 4% (+/-2%) while supporting growth; not derived from a formula, it is a discretionary policy decision.
Release and revisions
Published: As per RBI MPC meeting (~bi-monthly)
As per RBI MPC meeting calendar — six scheduled meetings a year, roughly every two months
Revisions: Reviewed and potentially changed at each MPC meeting (~every two months, six times a year); can also change via an unscheduled/off-cycle meeting in exceptional circumstances.
